SkinCare Physicians in Boston Announces Expanded CoolSculpting™ Program for FDA Approved Non-Invasive Fat Layer Reduction.
Boston, Massachusetts (September 2010) – Dermatologists Drs. Kenneth Arndt, Jeffrey Dover, Michael Kaminer and Tom Rohrer of SkinCare Physicians today announced the availability of CoolSculpting™ by ZELTIQ™ in their laser, dermatology and cosmetic surgery practice in the Boston area. CoolSculpting is a ground-breaking technology recently cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for non-invasive reduction of fat. Developed by ZELTIQ, CoolSculpting uses a patented cooling technology to reduce fat in areas that don’t respond to diet and exercise, including the lower abdomen, love handles, flank and back bulges.
“CoolSculpting is a completely different approach to fat reduction that offers significant results without surgery, anesthesia, pain or downtime,” said Dr. Dover. “It’s an ideal procedure for people who are otherwise healthy and fit, but have localized fatty areas on their body that continue to bother them. After a simple in-office treatment, patients can immediately resume their normal activities, including work and exercise.” SkinCare Physicians offers this new, nonsurgical fat reduction treatment in addition to liposuction for Boston area residents. “Liposuction is still a great option, but CoolSculpting offers some patients another choice,” adds Dr. Arndt.
As leaders in the research performed to help develop the CoolSculpting procedure, SkinCare Physicians is very experienced and uniquely positioned to perform the procedure. They have treated hundreds of patients since their program started in the fall of 2009. Results have been beyond expectations with over 80 % of individuals pleased with their results.
Unlike most devices (lasers, radiofrequency, etc.), CoolSculpting works by using a cooling technology to gently target unwanted fat cells and cause a selective, permanent fat reduction. During the procedure, an applicator is applied to deliver a controlled amount of cooling at temperatures just above freezing. The therapy directly targets the underlying fat, leaving the skin surface and other tissue unaffected. The cooled fat cells begin a process called “apoptosis” (natural cell death) and gradually begin to shrink and disappear.
Patients will see results as early as 3 weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results occurring within 2 to 4 months. On average, each CoolSculpting procedure results in a 20% reduction of fat in the treated area. Worldwide, more than 7,000 patients have been treated.
Drs. Arndt, Dover, Kaminer and Rohrer explain that it is important to realize the procedure is not intended for overall weight reduction or for more pronounced fat removal better suited for liposuction or surgery. According to Dr. Kaminer, “this technology makes fat reduction more accessible to women and men, allowing them to achieve the optimal body shape they desire.” Dr. Rohrer observes that “our patients tell us they feel a difference in how their clothes fit even before they notice the physical change. It’s exciting – and clearly the next frontier in aesthetic dermatology.”
