Your guide to seborrheic keratoses

Published on May 10th, 2018 by Jeffrey Sobell, MD

Seborrheic keratoses (SK) are very common skin growths.  They may seem worrisome as they can look like a wart or a skin cancer, but they are completely harmless and can easily be removed by our dermatologists near Boston. SK’s tend to develop in middle age or older and increase in number over time.  They can be seen almost anywhere on the skin, but favor the chest, back, head and neck. SK’s typically start as small rough bumps, and slowly thicken to take on a warty surface.  Classically, they have a waxy “stuck-on-the-skin” appearance.  The color can range from white to … Continue reading »

SkinCare Physicians weighs in on “filler fatigue”

Published on May 3rd, 2018 by Michael Kaminer, MD

Let me say this plainly and succinctly…“filler fatigue” due to repeated hyaluronic acid based injections is a hoax. There is absolutely no truth to the notion that long term use of fillers causes problems with skin laxity or integrity. Cosmetic dermatologists now have nearly two decades of data on the safety and efficacy of fillers used in the United States and around the world. At SkinCare Physicians in Chestnut Hill, MA (just outside of Boston), we pride ourselves on treating patients safely with hyaluronic acid based fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Belotero, and importantly these treatments have been highly … Continue reading »

Exciting new approach to the treatment of upper lip lines

Published on Apr 24th, 2018 by Jeffrey Dover, MD

Skin changes related to aging include sagging, discoloration, lack of glow and luster, and wrinkling. While some wrinkles are tolerable, vertical lip lines drive some women to distraction. These lines often remind them of their childhood when their grandmothers or great aunts’ red lipstick bled into the upper lip lines. Now they look in the mirror and see these same lines. At SkinCare Physicians, our cosmetic dermatologists have developed a comprehensive approach to improving these lip lines, including a new component to perfect the results. SkinCare Physicians’ new upper lip lines treatment Our approach includes using neuromodulators such as Botox … Continue reading »

Nicotinamide, a simple vitamin to prevent skin cancer?

Published on Apr 10th, 2018 by Robin Travers

Many of Dr. Robin Travers’ patients at SkinCare Physicians ask her if there are any vitamins or supplements they can take to improve the health of their skin.  She has answered, honestly, that there aren’t many carefully controlled scientific studies that prove that vitamins have any benefit for the skin.  That may be changing! In the ONTRAC (Oral Nicotinamide to Reduce Actinic Cancer) study, Australian researchers showed that nicotinamide, an inexpensive and easily available form of vitamin B3, significantly reduces the incidence of nonmelanoma skin cancers among people who have already had a basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. … Continue reading »

Tired of looking tired? Treat the dark circles under your eyes

Published on Mar 27th, 2018 by Karen Kim, MD

Patients often ask about dark circles under the eyes and what they can do to treat them. There are multiple reasons why dark circles appear and our cosmetic dermatologists at SkinCare Physicians have multiple ways to help address them. Why under eye dark circles appear As we get older, the skin generally tends to become thinner and loose. This is especially true around the eyes, leading to a tired appearance. The under eye area (also called “tear trough”) can also appear hollow and sunken due to volume loss. Finally, the under eye area can look dark because of enlarged blood vessels. Blue veins around the eyes can become more … Continue reading »

Stretch marks – What are they and what can lasers do?

Published on Mar 1st, 2018 by Laurel Morton, MD

Many individuals are self-conscious about their stretch marks, including teenagers, adults, men and women. While not harmful to the health, nobody enjoys seeing them in the mirror.  Unfortunately, once stretchmarks appear they don’t go away. The good news is that cosmetic dermatology practices, such as SkinCare Physicians in Brookline Mass, have effective laser treatments that can significantly improve their appearance.  But first, let’s understand what causes stretch marks. Why do stretch marks appear? Stretch marks are distinct lines on the skin that can occur after any relatively quick stretching of the skin. Causes include teenage growth spurts, weight gain, pregnancy … Continue reading »

Is laser hair removal for you?

Published on Feb 15th, 2018 by Jeffrey Dover, MD

It’s hard to believe that just over 15 years ago there was no such thing as laser hair removal. Now lasers and light sources are used the world over to permanently remove hair with little discomfort and little effort. Developed by Harvard dermatologists, this technique has revolutionized hair removal. While the effectiveness and safety of laser hair removal devices are no longer in question, results and patients’ satisfaction depend on several factors. Brown/black hair vs. blonde/white hair Laser hair removal is effective in most individuals regardless of the color of their skin. However, brown and black hair can be permanently … Continue reading »

New Fraxel FQR for skin rejuvenation: Faster recovery, same efficacy

Published on Feb 6th, 2018 by Michael Kaminer, MD

For over a decade, the Fraxel family of lasers has been a mainstay of skin rejuvenation treatments at SkinCare Physicians. These lasers are superb at improving fine lines and wrinkles, removing brown spots and pigmentation, and creating an overall improvement in skin texture and quality. However, one of the limiting aspects of Fraxel laser treatments has been recovery, in some cases up to a week. Our patients are universally pleased with Fraxel results, but often comment that the procedure would be so much easier if we could only shorten the recovery time. Well, in our never ending quest to improve … Continue reading »

Cellfina for cellulite: The 5-year post-treatment results are in!

Published on Dec 28th, 2017 by Michael Kaminer, MD

Cellfina has become the gold standard for treatment of cellulite on the buttocks and thighs. Based on discoveries made at SkinCare Physicians in Boston, and since its FDA approval several years ago, Cellfina has quickly become the standard by which all cellulite therapies are measured. 99% of patients will achieve noticeable improvement in dimples and smoothness, and our dermatologists now have proof that those results are long lasting. At SkinCare Physicians, our dermatologists recently completed the latest aspect of our research into the efficacy of Cellfina. We saw patients at their 5-year follow up visit, and all of the patients that we evaluated … Continue reading »
