Published on Mar 4th, 2025 by Mitalee Christman, MD

Dr. Christman explaining Botox and filler injection to patientCurious about what to expect at your Botox or filler visit? Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, preparation and understanding go a long way toward ensuring a smooth and rewarding experience. From arriving makeup-free to managing post-treatment care, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Keep reading for tips, timelines and advice to feel confident, comfortable, and ready to enjoy your refreshed, natural results.

Come prepared

Arrive with a clean face or be ready to remove your makeup upon arrival. While most people find the injections manageable, consider taking Tylenol an hour beforehand if you’re sensitive. Coming well-fed and hydrated can also make for a more comfortable experience.

Choose the right time

For best results, plan ahead. Exercise well before your visit, as we recommend avoiding strenuous workouts immediately before or after your appointment to reduce any bruising or swelling. Post neuromodulator treatments, refrain from lying down or putting pressure on your face for four hours. If you have an upcoming big event, book your appointment at least a couple weeks before to allow time for full results.

Bruising can happen

Some minor bruising is normal when needles are involved. If you’d like to minimize bruising, try to avoid alcohol the day prior your appointment and skip ibuprofen for about a week before—though this isn’t essential. Most bruises are small, fade within 7-14 days, and can easily be concealed with makeup.

Be patient with results

Results from neuromodulators like Botox can take up to two weeks to fully settle, while fillers generally need about a week. If you have any concerns while waiting, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re just a phone call away and always happy to assist.

Keep expectations realistic

Our goal is to enhance your natural beauty with subtle results that ideally are noticeable only to you. Patients often describe their post-treatment look as refreshed, well-rested, or simply happier. Neuromodulators like Botox and Dysport typically last 3-4 months, while fillers can last 6- 12 months, making regular visits with us—about three times a year—best for maintaining your refreshed appearance.

We look forward to helping you look and feel your best self. See you in clinic soon.
