A new medical school, the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE), opened five years ago in Rwanda’s remote northern sector of Butaro. The vision of its founders, Dr. Paul Farmer and Partners in Health, aimed to provide care where it was needed most. After years of planning, their efforts came to fruition, culminating in the establishment of a world-class medical school in a rural area of East Africa. The institution will be graduating its first physicians next summer. After 6 1/2 years of rigorous training, 40 newly minted doctors will provide care to underserved communities across the country and provide … Continue reading »
Now more than ever, culture is the driving force of an organization’s ability to successfully adapt to the ever-changing challenges set before us by the COVID pandemic. In the setting of a crisis, it can be helpful for any organization to refer back to its core values and mission for guidance. SkinCare Physicians’ cultural framework was naturally designed by our everyday collective purpose: caring for each other and our patients. In a very unsettling and unprecedented manner, almost everything in this everyday practice changed on Monday, March 16th, 2020, when Massachusetts Governor, Charlie Baker, declared the State of Emergency. The … Continue reading »

While this was not entirely novel, SCP differentiated itself early on by bringing together leaders in dermatology as equal partners. All of the originating physicians were in full time academic positions prior to establishing … Continue reading »

Krysten Cefalo, one of our talented medical assistants, chose to “treat” herself to a different vacation this fall for her birthday. She decided to volunteer in Costa Rica at medical shelters for elderly people and ill children with disabilities through International Volunteer HQ. Volunteering for a medical mission was something she wanted to do for years, but never had the confidence to do it until she had years of medical experience as a nurse. Krysten spent a week doing wellness checks, changing wounds, giving injections (up to 48 in a day!), and attending to bed-bound patients. Although she did not … Continue reading »
