Summer is here and most of us do not feel like we are “bathing suit ready.” In fact, “Excess weight on a part of the body” was listed as the #1 most bothersome aesthetic concern in a recent national survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. More than 60% of those polled said they were dissatisfied with their body size or shape. While diet and exercise are tried-and-true methods of losing weight and gaining muscle, there are numerous devices available in 2024 to help contour your body as well. Here is Dr. Rohrer’s quick recap on body contouring and muscle toning treatments.
SkinCare Physicians conducted some of the earliest studies on Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) and has continuously contributed to its advancements. This device uses handpieces that freeze small areas of fat and kill it permanently. CoolSculpting works best on well-defined localized areas like the abdomen or love handles but can be used in all sorts of areas including under the chin. Studies have shown a reliable 40 – 56 cubic centimeters reduction in fat (about the size of a quarter stick of butter) after each treatment. Another wonderful aspect of CoolSculpting is that there is no down time or recovery after the treatment. Patients can resume normal activities immediately.
SkinCare Physicians also has a variety of other devices that destroy fat by heating it up to a critical temperature rather than freezing it. These devices include high frequency ultrasound (e.g., Liposonix, UltraShape), radio frequency (e.g., truSculpt), and laser technologies (e.g., SculpSure). In addition, deoxycholic acid (Kybella) injections have been used to remove small areas of fat. While initially used under the chin for submental fat, Kybella can also be used in a variety of other areas including the jowls.
In addition, there are now devices that can actually build muscle in as few as four treatments. Areas such as the abdomen, buttocks, and legs have shown significant increase in muscle size and function. SkinCare Physicians performed a study on one of these devices, truFlex, showing it not only increased muscle mass, but even more importantly increased strength. Patients increased the time they could hold a plank by nearly 50% and the time they could hold a single leg wall sit by over 100%. We have also anecdotally seen many of our patients improve their balance and posture after a few treatments to the point of even relieving back pain. truFlex is based on multi-directional muscle stimulation utilizing electrical impulses. This completely non-invasive treatment takes about one hour to complete and requires a series of weekly treatments to start. Once the desired level of muscle conditioning is achieved, results can be maintained with treatments at monthly intervals or longer.
