TIXEL: Finally, a treatment to tackle under-eye wrinkles

Published on Nov 26th, 2024 by Laurel Morton, MD

Woman having a Tixel treatment for her fine lines around the eyesEvery day, patients ask us how to treat the fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes without too much down time. While procedures with Dysport and Botox can be helpful for crows feet, which are wrinkles at the sides of the eyes, the wrinkles under the eyes can be tricky to address with non-invasive procedures. Therefore, the physicians at SkinCare Physicians are excited to offer a new treatment called Tixel. This procedure is designed to improve the fine lines all the way around the eye and can also be used on pesky lines around the mouth.

What is Tixel?

Tixel is based on advanced thermo-mechanical technology. It delivers thermal (i.e. heat) energy to the surface of the skin with a titanium tip that has 81 tiny pyramid-shaped pins that reach 400℃. Applying a topical anesthetic beforehand ensures a comfortable experience during the procedure. As the device moves, it creates brief contact with the surface of the skin causing a very superficial, fractional ablation. Fractional means that only a portion of the skin is treated which allows for quicker healing time. This treatment stimulates collagen and improves the appearance of wrinkles.

Who Might Benefit from Tixel?

Tixel is safe for patients with any skin type. It is an excellent option for individuals with fine wrinkles around the eyes, including those delicate under-eye lines that Dysport or Botox may not successfully treat. It can also be used for fine lines around the mouth and many of our patients opt to treat both the eyes and mouth areas during one treatment session. For some patients, it may also lead to mild skin tightening.

What is the protocol for a Tixel treatment?

The treatment consists of 3-5 sessions performed a month apart by our skilled nursing staff. After applying a topical anesthetic for 30 minutes, the procedure is well-tolerated and quick. Recovery includes mild swelling and redness for 1-2 days, followed by fine speckling that fades over approximately 5 days. Improvement may be seen 1-2 months after starting treatment, but it can take several months to see the full effect of Tixel as collagen remodels. Like many of our cosmetic interventions, maintenance treatments can help to minimize fine wrinkles as the skin continues to age over time.

Tixel’s Added Benefit: Enhanced Delivery of Topical Products

Tixel creates small channels that allow the skin to absorb specific, recommended products such as Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid. Our nursing staff applies product immediately after treatment. Then you can incorporate these products into your daily skin routine to maximize benefit over the long term.

As with many of our cosmetic treatments, our dermatologists can enhance Tixel’s results by combining it with other tried-and-true therapies such as topical retinoids and neuromodulators (e.g., Botox, Dysport and Daxxify) for greater impact.

Wrinkles around the eyes can be challenging to treat, but we are thrilled to offer Tixel, a new effective solution with minimal down time. If you’re feeling like your eyes are aging faster than you would like, schedule a consultation to see if Tixel is an option for you.
