Simple ways to give your lips some TLC

Published on Jun 6th, 2017 by Brooke Sikora, MD

Woman giving TLC to her lipHave you ever suffered from chapped lips, a painful sunburn on your lips or overall dryness and cracking? Our lips are important in many functions of our daily lives and deserve some tender love. Caring for them correctly is not hard. Here are a few helpful daily steps to keep your lips healthy, protected and glowing.

Avène Hydrating SunBalm SPF +#1 Protect – Skin cancer is the most common kind of cancer in the United States and most commonly occurs on the head and neck, with the lips accounting for a portion of these skin cancers. Using a daily lip product that contains ultraviolet protection significantly decreases your risk of skin cancer of the lips. However, most people do not apply their photo protective lip block thickly or frequently enough. The Hydrating Sunscreen Balm SPF 50+ from Eau Thermale Avène is an excellent broad spectrum product which should be applied every hour or every two hours when in the sun for best protection.

#2 Exfoliate – Just as we exfoliate our skin, removing dry, older skin cells from our lips is essential to bring younger, plumper cells to the surface. There are many excellent, gentle sugar based scrubs on the market, which can help keep lips more hydrated and younger looking when used two to three times weekly.

#3 Hydrate – Applying a hydrating lip balm daily is important for overall lip health because the skin on the lip is unable to make its own oils to keep moisturized. Most lip products contain emollient agents such as shea butter or tocopherol acetate (vitamin E) and wax-like substances such as beeswax (propolis) or carnauba wax to seal in the moisture.

Skin Medica Lip System#4 Smooth and Plump – Go one step further and add hyaluronic acid, a water-loving molecule, to your routine lip care. Try the innovative SkinMedica HA5 Smooth and Plump Lip System, a two-step treatment that helps to plump the appearance of lips while providing smoothing and hydrating benefits. It is comprised of five forms of hyaluronic acid and a proprietary blend of antioxidants and peptides for better hydrated and healthier looking lips.

Add these simple steps to your lip care routine and quickly your lips will look healthier and more beautiful.

I am looking for a product for smokers lines above lips, they aren’t too bad but I notice them and don’t like them at all

    • Dr. Brooke Sikora says:

There are numerous causes for lip lines. These lines may be treated differently depending on the depth and cause. I would recommend consulting your dermatologist to find the treatment that is best tailored for you.
