Aging hands: How to turn back the clock

Did you know that aside from your face your hands get the most sun exposure? We tend to neglect our hands until it may be too late. As an aesthetician at SkinCare Physicians, the biggest concern I hear from patients about their hands is pigmentation, or coloring. Skin pigmentation disorders affect the color of your skin and sun exposure is the prime culprit. Whether you want to perfect your hand selfie engagement photos or want to turn back the clock and reverse the aging process from too much sun exposure, follow the prevention tips below or treat your hands to one of the latest treatments available at SkinCare Physicians.

At home prevention

  1. Keep a moisturizer on hand that contains a sunscreen and that you like. Apply it regularly and no longer worry about your hands when you’re outdoors. Keep a travel size in your car for when the sun beats on your hands while driving. Being in a vehicle give us a false sense of protection, but dangerous UV rays can still penetrate through our windows and attack our free radicals which speed up the aging process.
  2. Find an anti-aging hand cream that contain an SPF as well as a retinol and a glycolic acid to slow down the aging process. N°7 Protect and Perfect hand cream ($15) for younger-looking hands lighten dark spots while the sunscreen protects from future damage. Clinique makes a wonderful product that channels their hyper pigment technology in its Even Better Dark Spot Correcting Hand Cream Broad Spectrum SPF15 ($30)

In-office treatments

  1. Clear and brilliant – This gentle fractional laser refreshes all skin types from the inside out. The treatment helps reduce imperfections and sun damage. It is a wonderful anti-aging treatment that improves skin tone, smoothes skin texture, and leaves your hands’ skin glowing and luminous.
  2. Glycolic peel – This sugar based chemical peel softens your hands’ skin and improves its texture by revitalizing and rejuvenating it. It is recommended for hyper pigmentation and offers anti-aging benefits. Our 30 minutes express peel is a patient favorite for hands or faces!
  3. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) – This non-laser photorejuvenation treatment used on the face, neck, chest and arms is also great on hands. It delivers pulses of safe, effective, visible light to reduce the visible signs of sun damage and aging such as brown age spots.

It’s never too early to prevent aging hands with sunscreen, nor too late to turn back the clock with easy treatments that will make your hands look healthier and more youthful. The dermatologists and aestheticians at SkinCare Physicians can help you navigate the terrific options that we offer.
